South Oldham quarterback Jack Sherry wanted it to be over and made sure it was.
The senior scored on a two-point conversion run up the middle to give the Dragons a 43-42 double-overtime victory at archrival North Oldham on Friday night.
“Coach said we were going for one at first, but I knew we were going to go for it,” Sherry said. “The line did a great job. They (Mustangs) overloaded one side, but our line still opened a hole to get through. They just did a great job.”
Sherry’s run ended a wild, turnover-plagued contest in which the teams combined to lose five fumbles. The decision to go for the victory was not difficult for South coach Jamie Reed.
“We couldn’t stop them,” he said. “We were going to end it one way or another on that play, and fortunately, it worked out for us against a very good football team.”
Sherry hit Davis Culbertson with a touchdown pass over the middle on the Dragons’ first play of the second overtime. The Mustangs had taken a 42-35 lead on their possession on Keenan Dowd’s 4-yard quarterback sneak.
South scored first in overtime when Sherry hit Ticorion Williams over the middle with a 6-yard pass. North Oldham answered in three plays on another sneak from Dowd.
The game seesawed after North jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period behind its powerful running game led by senior Josh Smith.
South Oldham rebounded to score 21 points in the second quarter, with Sherry scoring on a 2-yard sneak and throwing two TD passes, a 36-yarder to Kyle Young and a 21-yarder to Williams with just 10 seconds left in the half.
North Oldham regained the lead on the first play on the fourth quarter when Dowd scored on a keeper from the 3. Sherry and Williams tied it at 28 on the next series when they hooked up on a 42-yard scoring pass down the right sideline.
“We had a lot of turnovers tonight, but we found ways to get ourselves back in the game,” Reed said. “It shows that when we cut down our mistakes, we can be a pretty special football team.”
The Dragons avenged an overtime loss last season.
“This is always an emotional game, a big game for our kids and our school,” Reed said. “We had a lot going on in school this week outside of football, and it took us a while to get settled down, but I thought the kids really responded well when they got down early.”
