Senior Blake Naylor scampered 10-yards for a touchdown on Georgetown College football's opening drive against Bluefield College and the rest was history. The Tigers (1-0) extend to an 18-game, regular-season win streak with a 77-9 win over the Rams (0-2) Saturday.
"It's always good to get that first game out of the way," said GC coach Bill Cronin. "We wanted to start strong and early. That is the key against youthful programs. Bluefield played a great game a week ago restarting the program against Pikeville. We didn't want them to have any momentum."
Georgetown took care of that as the defense almost pitched a shutout. With just 2:13 left in the first half, BC scored its only points of the game. A safety early in the third quarter gave the Rams their other two points.
The Tigers eat up a lot of ground and powered their way through the Bluefield defense for eight scores on 50 carries for 330 yards. Neal Pawsat went 9-of-13 for 140 yards and a strike to Chris Gohman for the lone passing score. Zach Sowder opened the second half with a 92-yard kick-off return to set the tone for the final 30 minutes. The fourth started with another special team's touchdown. This time Ryan Vaughn blocked a punt and returned it for the score.
"Our ground attack was strong and special teams scored twice," Cronin said. "That's what you like to see early in the season.
"Of course we have things on which to work. We had eight penalties. We have to clean that up, and we gave up a safety. Those are things that can hurt you down the road."
Melvin Posey led the rushing attack with 121 yards on six carries and two scores. Naylor had six carries for 40 yards and three scores. Jesse Morrell, John Carver and Randy Doss also found the end zone off the rush.
The Tigers are back in action Thursday for their home-opener against Faulkner University (1-0). The Eagles are coming off a 43-10 road win over University of Virginia College at Wise.
The game will be under the lights at Toyota Stadium, unveiling the new iHigh.com Field. Through attendance, social media and broadcasting the game, Georgetown is looking to get Tiger Nation to rally together for 10,000 Tigers.
