Brittany McKee named top softball player in county

Somerset â The 2012 softball season was one of success for Somerset, Southwestern, and Pulaski County.
All three local programs advanced to the 12th Regional Tournament for the third consecutive season this spring, and the 2012 campaign also saw the Lady Jumpers win their second straight 47th District title, while the Lady Warriors were champions once again in the 48th District this season for the seventh straight year.
With that being said, itâs time to unveil this yearâs picks for The Commonwealth Journal/Clear Channel Radio All-County Softball Team.
Leading the way on our team is our Player of the Year.
For an outstanding senior campaign, this yearâs top honor on our squad goes to Pulaski Countyâs Brittany McKee, who makes our team for the third straight season.
McKee was a terror at the plate this year, leading the Lady Maroons with a .486 batting average, while pacing her team with 55 hits.
McKee paced Pulaski County in doubles (15), while also leading the way in homeruns (7).
The PC senior also was tops on her club with 43 RBI for the year.
On the mound, McKee posted a 13-14 record, but had a very respectable ERA of 2.68.
In her 177 1/3 innings pitched, McKee fanned 109 hitters, and only allowed 157 hits.
Joining McKee on our squad are two of her teammates â Kendra Hyden and McKala Blevins.
Hyden â a member of our squad in 2011 â had a remarkable senior year as well for the Lady Maroons, leading PC in triples (9), while also finishing on top with 45 runs scored.
The senior shortstop also led PC with 17 stolen bases for the year.
Blevins meanwhile is a newcomer to our squad this season, as the junior catcher had a very nice year indeed.
Blevins hit .341 for the season, on the strength of 44 hits which included 13 doubles.
Three Southwestern players make our squad for this season â Sydney Fourman, Destiny Molden, and Lensey Halcomb.
Fourman â who made our team in 2011 as a freshman â led Southwestern with a .558 batting average for the year, and she also led her club with 10 doubles, 5 homeruns, and 25 RBI.
On the mound, Fourman notched an 11-9 record, while tallying 70 strikeouts.
Molden â a member of our squad last year as an eighth grader â meanwhile played a solid shortstop all season long for the Lady Warriors, while being solid at the plate as well.
The freshman notched 36 singles, 6 doubles, 2 triples, drove in 22 RBI, while scoring 20 runs.
Halcomb â also a member of last seasonâs All-County Team â had another solid campaign with 28 singles, 9 doubles, 1 homerun, 21 RBI, while scoring 9 runs.
Three Lady Jumpers made our squad for this season â Bethany Edwards, Lauren Rice, and Rachel Whitaker.
Whitaker led Somerset with a .442 batting average for the 2012 season, with 42 hits.
Edwards â one of the top outfielders in the entire 12th Region and a member of our All-County Team in 2011 â hit .390 for the season, with 41 hits, while leading the Lady Jumpers with a team-high 24 walks.
Rice meanwhile did damage at both the plate and on the mound.
As Somersetâs main pitcher, the junior fanned 180 hitters with an ERA of 2.50.
At the plate, Rice hit .325 with 41 hits on the season.
Rounding out our squad are three players that made The All-County Team as Honorable Mention selections.
Those three players are Southwesternâs Allie Venable, Somersetâs Kirstchen Roberts, and Sarah Howard from Pulaski County.
Venable came out of nowhere this season to post some very solid numbers in an outstanding sophomore season.
Venable hit a very respectable .361 with 23 singles, 4 doubles, 3 triples, 9 RBI, and 21 runs scored.
Roberts meanwhile, despite missing several games at the end of the year with a thumb injury, hit .395 and led Somerset with 45 hits on the year.
Howard hit .296 for the Lady Maroons this season, posting 35 hits, which included 7 doubles.
On the mound, Howard posted a 2-7 record with an ERA of 4.91.
