Bucs show bats, poise in opener

GOODY, Ky. - Michael Hagy walked on to the field at Massey Energy Field Monday night and his field of dreams became a reality.

His Belfry Pirates wasted no time in delivering a reality check to neighboring Williamson. Pinch hitter Shane Williamson smacked a two-run double to right field in the bottom of the fifth inning to insure Belfry a 12-2 mercy-rule win over the Wolfpack.

“it's just amazing to sit here and look at this field,” Hagy, who is entering his second season at the helm of the Pirates' program, said. “To be competitive, you must have a facility like this where kids can work and train during the off season. Fans witnessed a new team tonight because a lot of our kids have been out working since September.”

Belfry (1-0) got two innings of one-hit ball from pitcher Chris West. He also finished with two doubles and a RBI at the plate and fanned five batters on the mound.

Third baseman Tyler Dotson, who eventually finished the game on the mound, handed the Bucs a 7-2 lead on a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth inning. He later scored on a ground out by Williamson to make it 8-2.

“I thought we played very well for an opening game,” Hagy said. “We're still a very young team, but I thought our kids showed tonight that they have matured since last season.” The Pirates, who dress just three seniors, started their four-run fifth inning with a double by West. Left fielder Aaron Chapman, who finished with a pair of hits, a RBI and three runs, belted home West on a single to make it 9-2. Chapman set up the game-clinching hit when he scored on an error.

Williamson (0-1) had just two hits and committed five errors.

“We played hard,” Wolfpack coach Pedro Ledger said. “We just didn't play that smart sometimes. We're still very young, and we have plenty of time to correct some mistakes.”

First baseman “Mad” Max Mounts had two singles and a RBI to lead Williamson. Josh Stacey and losing pitcher Richard Forbes each scored a run.

Forbes, a four-year starter, worked three innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He also struck out five batters and walked three.

Belfry returns to action today against Burch at 5 p.m. Williamson travels to Tolsia Thursday night. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
