It’s been six years since the 28th District went to its current alignment for baseball, and Eastern High School coach John Morris said it’s never been tougher.

“It’s definitely the toughest district in (the Seventh Region) this year,” Morris said. “Every team has a quote-unquote Division I pitcher.”

The 28th District has just one ranked team — No. 2 Eastern — but definitely will be one to watch as baseball and softball postseason play opens across Kentucky today.

With Eastern (29-7), Kentucky Country Day (22-8), Christian Academy (22-11) and Jeffersontown (20-14), the 28th is one of just two districts in the state with at least four teams with winning records. All five teams (Lexington Catholic, Lafayette, Lexington Christian, Paul Dunbar and Tates Creek) have winning records in the 43rd District, which generally is regarded as the state’s toughest.

“To show you how strong it is, Christian Academy is the No. 4 seed and has been in and out of the Top 25 all year long,” Morris said. “They’ve already beaten St. Xavier, too. They’ll be our toughest first-round game ever.”

Eastern will host CAL at 5 p.m. today, with J’town to face KCD in the 7:30 p.m. semifinal. The winners will meet in Tuesday’s 6 p.m. final and advance to next week’s Seventh Region Tournament.

Eastern beat CAL 10-7 on May 1 and has won seven of its past eight games. The Eagles feature two pitchers who have signed with the University of Louisville — Robert Strader and Jonah Philley. Morris would not say which one would start against CAL today.

Senior Matthew Mitchell has been a solid pitcher for CAL all season, though coach Tim Brown has several other options to face Eastern.

J’town, which beat KCD 6-1 on May 1, is led by senior pitcher Cody Maerz, who has signed with Murray State. KCD likely will counter with junior Will Smith.

Another district to watch in Louisville is the 25th, which will be hosted by No. 7 Male. The Bulldogs will face rival Manual at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner meeting No. 3 St. Xavier in Wednesday’s 7 p.m. final.

The only Louisville-area softball district tournament with two ranked teams is the 25th, which features No. 4 Mercy and No. 9 Male. Manual will host Male at 5 p.m. Tuesday, with the winner facing Mercy in Wednesday’s 5 p.m. final.
