Walking through his high school graduation ceremony means more to Holmes boys’ basketball standout Dontel Rice than participating in an all-star game.

Rice had been invited to try out for the Kentucky All-Star team that will be playing the Indiana All-Stars in their annual two-game series in June, but according to Holmes head coach Jason Booher, who is also serving as head coach of the Kentucky All-Stars, he opted not to take part because the first game on June 8 in Louisville’s Freedom Hall is the same date as Holmes’ graduation.

“He said graduation was too important for him to miss,” Booher wrote in an e-mail. “I don’t blame him.”

Rice, a 6-foot-4 forward who was named Enquirer Northern Kentucky Player of the Year, just committed to Gulf Coast Community College in Panama City, Fla., on Monday, according to Booher.Walking through his high school graduation ceremony means more to Holmes boys’ basketball standout Dontel Rice than participating in an all-star game.
