Holy Cross scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Indians beat Newport Central Catholic, 2-0 in the Region 9 All ‘A’ final at Florence Freedom Field on Wednesday.
Senior second baseman Rick Pangallo led off the decisive frame with a double to right center field, and junior third baseman Blake Tiberi followed by drawing a walk.
With runners at first and second, senior center fielder Justin Kohake grounded a ball between first and second bases, and Pangallo scored on an error.
Kohake tried to steal second, and on a throwing error Tiberi scored Holy Cross’ second run.
Senior right-hander Kyle Fuller went the distance for the Indians, holding NewCath without a hit until the fifth inning. The Thoroughbreds managed just four hits for the game.
Holy Cross held its opponents to two runs in the tournament, recorded consecutive shutouts in the last two games.
NewCath had runners at first and third with one out, but Fuller notched a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.
