Somerset —

For five innings, Southwestern held a 1-0 lead over Lincoln County.
It was the last two innings that bit the homestanding Warriors, as the visiting Lincoln County Patriots plated three runs on two hits to claim a come-from-behind, 3-1 victory over South-western on Thursday night at Warrior Stadium.
With two hits and one run in the opening inning, it looked as if it would be a good day for the Warriors, but that’s not how things would pan out for the boys in blue and orange. In fact, Southwestern would never cross the plate again, but would have there chances, as they left nine runners on the base paths over the course of the final six innings.
Alex Eaton, who his in his second season as the Warriors baseball head coach, was very upset with his team’s performance in the two-run loss to the Brad McNew’s Patriots.
“That’s your answer right there - nine runners were left on base,” began Eaton. “The only big hit we had was in the first inning. We had runners at third three more times and didn’t score a run.”
“We’ve got to get the big hits and that’s the bottom line. They’ve got to be able to come up with hit in big situations. You’ve got to produce when you’re given scoring opportunities.”
With one out in the first inning, senior Dusty Phelps delivered that ‘big hit,’ as the Warrior third baseman drilled the ball opposite field off the wall for a triple. Phelps would score on the following at-bat thanks to an RBI single from junior Logan Starnes, who put the Warriors out front early, 1-0.
Southwestern had plenty of chances to widen the gap between them and the Patriots, but the Warriors couldn’t seem to come up with the big hit when they needed to. In the second, third, and fourth innings, the Warriors ended that frame with a runner on third base, while stranding five runners on the base paths.
Brad McNew’s Patriots would knot the contest up at one apiece in the sixth frame. John Day, who reached on a walk, was able to take second and third on an overthrow on a stealing attempt. Ryne Otto made the ‘Blue and Orange’ pay for their mistake, as he came up with a sacrifice fly to tie the ballgame up at 1-1.
The Warriors looked as if they would come out in the bottom of the frame and retake the lead. And why not? Southwestern had the bases loaded. But once again, the Warriors were not able to get the clutch hit when they needed to, which kept the score tied up at one heading into the seventh inning of action.
A two-out, two-run single from Tanner Leigh in the top of the seventh frame would propel the Patriots to a 3-1 victory over Southwestern.
According to Eaton, this loss will sting for quite a while.
“Throughout the course of the year, you always look back at games and say ‘We shouldn’t have lost this one.’ This is going to be one of those games.”
Senior Bradley Logsdon had a nice night for the Warriors both on the mound and at the plate. On the hill, the senior pitched six innings, giving up three hits on one run. Logsdon, at the dish, finished 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles.
“Bradley threw a heck of a game - hats off to him,” praised the second-year Warrior skipper. “He threw strikes and did his job, but we didn’t do our job offensively.”
Starnes had two hits and one RBI, while Phelps rounded out Southwestern’s five hits with a triple. Phelps, who pitched the seventh inning, was saddled with the loss.
Michael Wilcher earned the win in a complete game outing for Lincoln County. Wilcher gave up five hits and struck out six batters in the victorious outing.
The Warriors, now 1-2 overall, will be on the road today, playing against Bell County and Clay County.
