The Washington County baseball team took the field last week for the first time this season, when they traveled to Fern Creek for a scrimmage against the Tigers. Several Commanders were impressive on the mound, as five pitchers combined to no-hit Fern Creek over eight innings.
“We looked good,” said Head Coach Derek Schuler. “The pitching and defense looked very solid. Our bats aren’t quite there yet for the most part, but that’s usually the last thing to come.”
Seniors Blake Smith, Connor Riney, Trae Abell and Taylor Wheatley and junior Thomas Spalding stifled Fern Creek hitters throughout the scrimmage.
Washington County managed five hits in the first five innings -- four singles and a double -- including RBI singles from Smith and Abell, but didn’t record a hit after the fifth inning. Schuler said the rusty bats weren’t a surprise, and said now that the anticipation of getting back on the field is out of the way, his team can focus on getting better.
“A lot of our older guys that we’re going to look to have been playing basketball, and those guys just need more reps, and they’ll get there,” he said. “On Wednesday, everybody was very anxious and super excited to be playing, but we’ve got that out of the way and we’ll be ok.”
Schuler also said there is still playing time to be earned in the outfield.
“We have a couple of outfield positions that are still open and are being battled for. Guys out there showed something on Wednesday and they’ll continue to,” he said.
The Commanders’ scrimmage scheduled for Monday night at home against Spencer County was canceled due to rain. They’ll open the regular season with a pair of home games on Thursday against Lincoln County at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday against Collins at noon. They’ll be on the road at Marion County on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and Taylor County on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
