The most important thing that the boys on the Simon Kenton bowling team wanted to accomplish this season was to legitimize the fledgling sport at their school so others would want to follow their lead and participate in future years.

The Pioneers believe they accomplished that Saturday at the Region 5 team championships at La Ru Lanes in Highland Heights by upsetting top-seeded Campbell County in the final. Simon Kenton, seeded No. 3, swept the Camels in three games with a series total of 667. Campbell County finished with 617.

"We knew we had to win and we got our marks," said Pioneers freshman Cody Hail, who earned an all-region selection.

Simon Kenton defeated No. 6 Newport Central Catholic in the quarterfinals and beat No. 7 Bishop Brossart in the semifinals. Against Campbell County, the Pioneers won by scores of 191-180, 231-226 and 245-211.

"Our guys stayed on task and focused and we came out with a win," Pioneers coach Dave Hampton said. "I think what helped us is we beat Campbell in our second to last match of the season and that just boosted our confidence. I knew if we faced them again, we'd do well."

Simon Kenton sophomore A.J. Crone was named tournament most valuable player. He and teammates Chris Fetcher, Brian Fetcher and Matt Schwier exchanged hugs after they put away the Camels in the first regional varsity bowling tournament in Northern Kentucky history.

"We want to let the students know that we're a good part of Simon Kenton athletics," said Crone, the team's lone left-hander. "We're new, but we're here to win."

Matt Chalk was named all-region for the Camels, who also advance to the state team tournament March 22 in Louisville.

"It would have been nice to win but we qualified for state," said coach Wayne Herringer, whose Camels beat No. 5 Scott in the semifinals. "We're going to go down to state and start over. We still think we have one of the best teams, but Simon Kenton deserved to win today."

Also named all-region were Brossart's Ian Nieses, Scott's Trevor Kessans, Highlands' James Killen, NewCath's Darren Quinn, Newport's Andrew Marsee and McKenzie Kiefer of Dayton.

Campbell did not leave without a championship as the top-seeded girls edged No. 3 Brossart, 777-750 in a five-game final. The Camels' Brianne Vogelpohl was named MVP. Teammate Allison McGlasson was named all-region in addition to Allison Steelman of the Mustangs who also advanced to state.

The Campbell girls downed No. 5 NewCath in the semis and Brossart upset No. 2 Newport to earn the final. Other all-region selections included NewCath's Karinne Holtz, Newport's Katlyn Hoeh, Scott's Jordan Mastin, Simon Kenton's Rachel Haught and Barbara Cata of Highlands.
