Nicholasville-Jessamine County Parks and Recreation inducted nine members into the Jessamine County Youth Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday.

The 2012 class includes Paul Bingham, James Graham, Johnny Dale Hager, Jeff Moberly, Bill Sandlin, Darrell Squires, Flo Walker, Mike Wheeler, and Bobby Day Wilson.

• Bingham has been a fixture at local basketball courts throughout the county, providing instruction, guidance and even refreshments as a volunteer.

• Graham was involved with the Jessamine County youth football program for more than 10 years and the youth basketball league for nearly 20. He has also coached softball for more than two decades and is a player favorite on the softball field.

• Hager has coached football, baseball, and basketball in multiple divisions and levels over the last 30 years. He also worked for the parks and rec department during the 1990s and “has been instrumental in developing and strengthening youth sports” in the county, parks and rec director Duane McCuddy said.

• Moberly spent 1993-2000 coaching baseball before moving behind the plate to umpire in 2001. He is a current member of the Jessamine County Youth Baseball Board. Moberly has coached basketball since 1996 and has been instrumental in developing youth bowling in the county. He is currently the boys’ bowling coach at West Jessamine High School. In 2010, he was named 2010 Horse Capital Bowling Conference Coach of the Year.

• Sandlin coached football, basketball and baseball from 1986-2001 winning 12 championships. He is currently the clock operator for the East Jessamine High School basketball games.

• Squires coached youth baseball from 1997-2004 and has since been an umpire and served on the JCYB board. He has coached in the basketball league since 2000 and is currently coaching two teams.

• Walker helped bring the softball and girls’ basketball programs up to date and coached Jessamine County High School. “Flo has been a vital part of the girls’ programs in Jessamine County,” McCuddy said.

• Wheeler passed away in 1993 but left a lasting mark on area sports. He coached his three children (Gerald, Mikey and Ashley) in youth basketball, tee-ball, baseball and football. “It is an honor to induct Chief Mike Wheeler into our Parks and Recreation Hall of Fame,” McCuddy said. Wheeler’s wife Brenda and his three children were on hand to accept the award.

• Wilson’s coaching career dates back to the late 1960s, when he taught school and coached golf, track and field, baseball, and football. Wilson helped get the youth league football program started in the late ’60s and early ’70s and coached until the mid-’80s. He has served as a magistrate for 18 years.
