Danville senior Rhodes Bell shook off a first-round loss in the 170-pound class and ripped off five straight wins over the last two days, and finished fourth Saturday in the state wrestling championships at the Kentucky Horse Park.
“I feel really good because it’s a long way to wrestle backs (consolation matches) after you lose your first one,” said Bell, who was 5-2 over the weekend. “It’s the most matches you can have, actually, if you lose your first one and then wrestle your way back to wrestle for third.”
Bell was pinned by Jake Maupin of Fairdale with 35 seconds left in the third-place match and finished the season 48-6. He was trailing by four late and Danville coach Jeff Selby Bell had to make something happen.
Bell lost to Casey Mink of Wayne County 5-4 in the first round. He next had two straight pins, then beat Brennen Boykn of Eastern
9-5 to get into the medal round.
Next, he got revenge on Mink, pinning him in 2 minutes, 47 seconds. Bell then finally got a win over LaRue County’s Caleb Canter, scoring a takedown in the final 15 seconds to earn a 5-4 victory in the consolation semifinals. Canter beat Bell in the Region 2 final last weekend and at the Region 2 Duals earlier this year.
“I feel a lot better this time. He’s a real tough kid and it came down the very end,”¿Bell said. “I got a good takedown and just rode him out for the rest of the time.”
Bell finished fifth in the state at 160 pounds last year, and said this year was much more challenging.
“(170) was a lot tougher competition, but I was really pleased with how I did,” said Bell, who noted that the fact his prep career was over was starting to set in.
“You see all those guys coming in for the finals, and the grand march and all that stuff, it’s weird to think about you’ll never get another chance at it again.”
Selby is just sorry to his senior go.
“I wish he wasn’t a senior. He’s a great worker and he’ll be missed,”¿Selby said. “He’s definitely done a lot for Danville wrestling.”
Also for Danville, Daniel Lannum (126) was 2-2 and Elliott Porter (285) finished 3-2.
Kody Wade (145) had the best finish for Boyle County. He won his first match, was pinned in his second then had three straight victories. But he forfeited to Nick Waits on Central Hardin, who Wade beat in the regional final last week in the consolation semifinals to finish 4-2.
Also for the Rebels, Lucas McCain (106) was 1-2, Zack Cope (145) was 3-2, Dallin Tritapoe (160) was 3-2 and Austin Muntz (220) was 0-2.
