HENDERSON, Ky. — Alphonso Baity hit two free throws with 0:02.7 to play to give Evansville Memorial a 37-35 win and a regular-season sweep over Henderson County on Saturday night.

Following a Henderson County turnover with 10.2 remaining, Baity drove to the basket and Rick Armstead was whistled for the blocking foul. With his team having just five fouls in the half, Henderson County coach Mark Starns wanted the Colonels to foul — only earlier, to force the Tigers to inbound the ball again.

"We had a foul to give and wanted to give it around seven seconds. We did not do it. We let him drive in," Starns said. "He left his feet, and I thought we had good position, but it didn't go that way."

The Colonels immediately put the ball in play, and David Simmons' 30-footer hit off the front of the rim. "I did call a timeout, but I didn't get it," Starns said.

A putback attempt went through the hoop, but was after the final buzzer.

"We played well enough to win the game," Starns said. "Our defense has been superb the last two games. If we can get our offense clicking with our defense, we're going to be pretty good."

The polar opposite of Memorial's 70-64 win in the season opener, Saturday's game was a defensive battle with points at a premium.

"The first game was up-tempo. This was more of a meat grinder, with both teams playing good defense," Starns said.

The game had 14 lead changes, and neither team had a lead of more than four points. Henderson County had its largest lead at 6-2 midway through the first quarter and again at 24-20 in the middle of the third quarter. Memorial's biggest lead was 13-10 in the second quarter.

Cain Cooper, who scored a team-high 11 points, scored the first six points of the fourth quarter for the Colonels. Two free throws by Kaleb Duckworth tied the game at 35 with 2:49 to play. After a timeout at the 1:44 mark, Henderson County spread the floor and ran the clock. Following another timeout with 0:33.7 to go, the Colonels turned the ball over as Brandon Auker forced Armstead into a five-second violation.

Baity, who is a Henderson native, led Memorial (12-4) with 10 points. Nick Ahlers added nine.

Jermain Langley, who was honored before the game as part of the senior night activities, and Duckworth added nine points apiece for Henderson County (12-13).

Henderson County won the junior varsity game, 56-49, to improve to 14-0. Hunter McDonald led the Colonels with 17 points. D.J. Washington scored 12 and Chad Sellars added 10.

The Colonels visit Owensboro Catholic on Tuesday in the first of three games this week
