I am sure most, if not all, of us have heard Coach Cal to the NBA for years. Let me state for the record that I do not believe he will leave college basketball, unless something incredible comes up. It is fun to discuss this stuff though.
Why do I bring this up for discussion? Look at some of my thoughts:
1. Stars in the making.
DeMarcus Cousins. -We all know the talent he has. He can be one of the best post players in the league, and has the potential to be a 20-15 or better player.
Marcus Thornton -Many of you may remember him from his days as the SEC M.O.P while at LSU. Now he averages 20-3-2-2, and is a 30 point scorer on any given night. Shoots 40% plus from 3 as well.
Tyreke Evans Just 2 seasons ago, he was the NBA Rookie of the Year. When healthy has averaged 20-5-5 and plays good defense.
2. Could reunite with two former players of his.
The man that made NCAA stars of Cousins and Evans, could do the same with them in the NBA. Both have unreal talent that can be seen by anyone that watches them play. Both have stated how much they loved playing for him as well.
3. The possibility of the team moving to Anaheim (just outside of Los Angeles) OR Las Vegas.
Anaheim made a strong case and continues to do so to bring in the Kings. Have offered to pay a lot of money to renovate or build a new arena to bring the Kings in.
Las Vegas is where the Maloofs (Kings Owners) made their millions.
-In 1994 the Maloof family bought the Fiesta Hotel in Las Vegas for $8 million, selling it in 2000 for over $185 million. The money was reinvested into the creation of The Palms hotel and casino.
-In addition to their gaming business, the Maloofs had exclusive proprietorship rights to the distribution of Boston Beer Company, Coors, Corona, Guinness, Heineken, Miller, Red Bull, and Tecate products throughout New Mexico. They sold Maloof Distributing in 2010 to Admiral Beverage Corporation.
-The Maloof Companies are one of the largest single shareholders in Wells Fargo Bank.
So those are possibilities.
3. Coach Cal could be the new face, of the new team in a new city in the NBA.
Talk about popularity.
4. GETTING REALLY PAID!
Right now Paul Westphal gets paid $1.5 million. Obviously the lowest in the NBA. However, when Rick Adelman was there and winning, he was paid $6.9 million per season. When the Maloofs are serious about winning, they get a good coach and they pay him. Obviously, it would take a sweet salary to bring him in, and when they were happy in Sac-Town, they paid their coaches well.
BTW- When Adelman made $6.9, he was $1.4 million per season MORE than anyone else. http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketbal...oaches.htm That was in 2005 as well.
For the record, Coach Cal currently makes $4.5 annually. However, his contract includes a base salary of $400,000 and $3.4 million in media and endorsement money. No telling what he would make in endorsements and extra goodies when his base salary could be $7 million per season or more.
Obviously, this is just for fun. But what say you?
