Just announced on local television that NKY will be joining the Atlantic Sun conference with D1 sports schdules starting in 2012

:rockon::rockon:
Northern Kentucky University will pay $200,000 over five years to join the Atlantic Sun Conference, the first installment of millions of dollars it will pay to expand to Division I athletics.

NKU’s Board of Regents will formally accept the invitation later today, followed by a celebration inside the Bank of Kentucky Center on the Highland Heights campus.

It will start playing a full conference schedule in fall 2012 and athletes in individual sports can compete for titles the first year.

During the four year probationary period before it can compete for team championships and share in conference revenue, NKU will ramp up annual athletic department spending -- currently about $4.2 million a year -- by at least $3 million.

For example, the average Atlantic Sun member spends $6.8 million a year on athletics, according to a 2010 consultant’s study commissioned by NKU.

Travel to Atlantic Sun campuses will average 580 miles or 9.3 hours, the study found. The conference schools are located in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Atlantic Sun member universities are East Tennessee State, Florida Gulf Coast, Jacksonville, Kennesaw State, Lipscomb, Mercer, Stetson, North Florida and South Carolina Upstate.

NKU says it will have to pay for some of expansion out of its current budget. But it insists that new students, sponsorships and publicity will help pay for the rest.

That's great. Awesome.
Students knew about it last night, great for the school.
Great for NKU and great for Greater Cincinnati & Kentucky high school basketball. Still would've liked seeing them join the OVC
Great news, Lets get them on the football schedule lol.
I had heard for a while now that they would be going DI.
^ They have been trying for 5 years. Finally got the facilities approved over the past three years in different sports, so this was the first year that any conference would seriously consider them. They had already been turned down, so this is great news.
