HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Northern Kentucky University will announce Thursday that it will join the Atlantic Sun conference next year.
With nationally recognized men's and women's basketball programs, along with a men's soccer team that is the current Division 2 national champion, university officials made a strong case for entry into Division 1 via the Atlantic Sun conference.
Along with the pride and prestige of Division 1 status also comes increased revenue for the athletic department and university. Larger programs will pay smaller schools for early season games.
The news comes after NKU had already been rejected by the Ohio Valley Conference.
University officials will make the announcement this afternoon at 2 p.m. at The Bank of Kentucky Center.
