Buddy Johnson's fifth 3-pointer of the game - with 56 seconds left - propelled the Collins boys' basketball team to a 61-58 victory over Gallatin County in the season-opener for both Tuesday night.

Sophomore point guard Ralphie Stone deflected a shot by Wildcat Jordan Morris with less than 20 seconds left, then hit two free throws with 15.6 seconds left to play to preserve the victory for the Titans and first-year coach Chris Gaither.

Collins broke out to an early 11-3 lead before Gallatin County, a veteran team, got going. The Wildcats scored the final eight points of the first period to lead 18-16 and increased that advantage to 34-29 at intermission.

Gallatin County grew its lead to 11 in the third quarter before the Titans rallied behind the scrappy play of 5-foot-4 sophomore guard Jayton Winstead and football standout Michael Brooks. Those two keyed a 10-0 Collins run that pulled the Titans within one, 42-41, late in the period.

After a Gallatin 3-pointer Stone hit a shot in the lane before the quarter ended as Collins cut the Wildcats' lead to 45-43 at the start of the fourth period. Two free throws from Brian Stone then tied the game at 45-all 12 seconds into the final quarter. From there it was back-and-forth until the finish.

With 1:18 to play Gallatin County's Kristian Morgan put the Wildcats up 58-56 before Brooks found Johnson open on the right wing. The junior then knocked down the open jumper.

Johnson finished 5 for 9 from the field, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range, on his way to a team-high 15 points. Junior forward Dez Marshall added 13 points, while Brian Stone scored 12 points and Ralphie Stone 11. Marshall hit 5 of 6 free throws, while Ralphie Stone made all five of his free tries for the Titans, who were 14 of 15 from the foul line (93.3 percent) for the game. Collins also shot 56.3 percent from the field (21 of 36) and outrebounded the Wildcats 33-19. The Titans' only problem was their 17 turnovers (compared to Gallatin's nine).
