Final from Newport
A good win for Frankfort. Look forward to next week seeing them in person.
They get Rock next week. I heard that Frankfort can fly!
I was at this game, congrats to Frankfort on the victory, but they have plenty of work ahead of them. This was a very ugly game on all sides. Newport shot themselves in the foot several times on pointless penalties. false start, delay of game, illegal procedure. the offense was horrific. frankfort's offense looked fine, but they too committed too many pointless penalties and made several key mistakes. I was impressed with the way Leach ran the ball, but he needs to stay healthy. Now it was Week 0, both teams were lacking alot of experience and hopefully learn plenty from this game
another shut out for rock
I'm pleasantly surprised that the Wildcats were able to hang in this game. It's nice to see and hopefully they have a nice run this year
NEWPORT, Ky. - Football coaches expect their players to make mistakes in the season opener, but the Newport Wildcats made more than they could afford in a 14-8 loss to Frankfort on Saturday.

Newport committed six turnovers and had 17 penalties on offense, including one that nullified a long touchdown run. The Wildcats also had a touchdown denied when they were stopped on four plays from the 1-yard line.

“We need to get better,” said Newport coach Nick Rice. “The biggest thing is, obviously, we need to fix those stupid mistakes. Once we do that we’ll be a great football team.”

The loss overshadowed an impressive performance by Newport junior Daylin Garland. In addition to scoring his team’s only touchdown on a 92-yard punt return, Garland took over as quarterback in the second half with his team trailing 14-6 and made some big plays.

Early in the third quarter, Robert Washington made a one-handed catch on a pass from Garland at the seven-yard line. On the next play, Garland ran the ball to the 1-yard line, but the Wildcats were stopped on four consecutive rushing plays and turned the ball over on downs.

“A couple of our seniors just decided they weren’t going to let them score there,” said Frankfort coach Greg Foley. “I’m just proud to death of our kids and the way they stepped up and held them out.”

Two plays later, Newport defensive lineman Devin Roenker tackled Frankfort’s quarterback in the end zone for a two-point safety, but that was the only scoring for either team in the second half.

Newport scored in the opening minutes of the game on a 92-yard punt return by Garland, but the Wildcats’ offense had a tough time moving the ball due to turnovers and penalties.

The most costly mistake came with 4:30 left in the second quarter when Garland broke lose on a 67-yard TD run that was called back due to a holding penalty.

“Now lineman hold on every play, everybody knows that,” said Rice. “Its just a shame when they get caught.”

Frankfort scored on two consecutive possessions in the second quarter to take a 14-6 lead. The Panthers’ second TD was set up by a blocked punt.

On that play, Newport punter Bradley Messer had trouble pulling down a high snap and had to punt amid a crowd of Frankfort players. The punt was partially blocked and Frankfort recovered the ball on the 25-yard line.

Two plays later, Frankfort freshman running back Jalen Acree broke through the left side of the line on a 22-yard touchdown run that put the Panthers up 14-6.

Frankfort’s offense, which was hampered by 15 penalties during the game, finished with 208 total yards (186 rushing, 22 passing). The Panthers’ leading rusher was senior Kaleb Leach with 87 yards on 13 carries despite leaving the game twice in the first half due to injuries.

Newport finished with 137 total yards (70 rushing, 67 passing). Starting quarterback Ron Rice, the head coach’s nephew, picked up 28 yards on 9 carries. He got most of his yardage in the second half when he was moved to running back.

Garland had 18 yards rushing and completed a 19-yard pass. He also had 108 total yards in returns and intercepted a Frankfort pass in the end zone as a defensive back
