I was at Cov Cath watching the freshman team practice, when Mitch McDowell, Cov Cath's punter, showed up to kick a few balls. He started off kicking about 50 yards or so from where he kicked it to where it landed. I figured that was about his best. Then he started rocking the ball 60-65 yards from kick to where it landed, with great hang time. After a while he would line up at the 50 yard line and start punting the ball through the uprights. After watching this, I was curious what other punters around the state were capable of doing. What would the average high school punting distance be for a punter? What distances and hang times do Division 1 colleges look for in a punter? I think this kid has the ability to go big
What are you trying to say by that?
^ 3.70 was listed as the longest hang time for a High School camp, thus 3.25-3.5 is probably the average
WE DON'T PUNT......WE GO FOR IT.........:rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon::rockon
Wow, 3.7 seems kind of low for the best hang time from a high schoo punter.
That can't be true. Anyone have an actual opinion rather than links? Those don't seem to be getting the job done.

Short answer is not long, and not far.
does anyone really clock hang time on punts in high school?
kicking in a practice setting isn't the same as in a game either
I've seen many QB's throw the ball 60+ yards in the air fooling around but couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with pressure, the same with punters

From the most commonly referenced kicking experts (not saying I agree all the time, but to give you an idea of what the national leaders look like on hang time, etc.):

Hope these help answer some of your questions.
^^^^ Suggests to me that a ratio of one second per 10 yards punted is considered the standard for "elite" when looking at standard punts. In other words a 45 yard punt that hangs for 4.5 seconds or a 40 yard punt that hangs for 4.0 seconds, or a 50 yard punt that hangs for 5.0 seconds.

Yes, on average. However, it appears that hang time declines (in reality) after about 45 yards from 1 second per 10 yards to maybe half a second. When you look at NFL punters, their hang times for the big booming, let it all hang out punts usually max out right around 5 seconds. I don't know if that is because of a difference in how hang time is calculated/measured, or what, though. But with the speeds associated with today's game, a hang time of 4.5 to 5 seconds generally cuts down significantly on returns. A punter who can perform under pressure, and with accuracy, is a very big weapon.
Well this kid seems to be a threat. He pinned the ball on the 1 yard line to seal the game for Cov Cath against Beechwood last season. What a game that was, and the ending was great. CCH has a great special teams squad.

Look, you asked a question, not an opinion. I found you links and it obviously did not give you the answer you were looking for! You the kids dad? Are you looking for cudos?
Sorry I was no looking for "cudos." And no I am not the kid's dad either. I wasn't trying to make that sound negative in any way. All that I'm saying is that you'll watch college punters kick bombs when they're only freshmen. They can't be much better than high school seniors. Those stats just don't seem accurate after seeing the talent that has come from kickers/punters at Cov Cath. Sorry for the tension.
let's see if he can do it consistently in games
