I have a presentation to do in my appalachian studies class, everybody else is doing coal or music so I decided to do sports. I am going to focus on three aspects of mountain sports.

Great Programs/Teams

Great Players.

And the truly great rivalries.

Any input or stories anyone has would be greatly appreciated, I am going to post this in Football, Basketball and Baseball forums. also any old pictures would be amazing to get ahold of.
Lemme find you my stupid long post.

Team (Regional Champions + Prior to 1976 State Tournament Appearances)
(Championships, Runner Ups, Final Fours)

Paintsville (17) (1 Championship, 1 Runner Up, 5 Final Fours):

Region 16 Champions: 1978, 1979 According to OTH 1976, 1977, 1980, 1981 that are missing in the program were awarded to Paintsville. That's 6 16th Region Championships.(1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981)
Region 15 Champions: KHSAA (1989, 1990, 2000, 2001)
OTH (1986 missing from KHSAA) New Info (1985, 1987, 1988)

Regional titles prior to 1976 are not listed, but Paintsville appeared in the State Tournament in 1942, 1957 and there is no information listed for 1944, but OTH listed it, so we will give it to them. 1944. I was made aware of 3 more by my Dad:

That would give Paintsville 17: 1942, 1944, 1957, 1976, 1977, 1978 (Final Four), 1979 (Final Four), 1980, 1981, 1985, 1986 (Final Four), 1987, 1988, 1989 (State Runner Up), 1990 (State Champions), 2000, 2001.

Pikeville (8) (1 Final Four):

15th Region: 1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2005, 2010 (Final Four)

Nothing from the KHSAA Books have Pikeville appearing in a State tournament previous to 1976, so if they won a regional championship, they did not advance any further than Sectionals.

Johnson Central (6) (1 Final Four):

16th Region: 1982, 1983
15th Region: 1995, 1996, 2004 (Final Four), 2007

(1994 from the 15th is missing. This could be JC, I have no idea.)
No appearances prior to 1976.

Lawrence County (5) (1 Runner Up, 1 Final Four):

16th Region: 1986, 1995, 2003
15th Region: 2008, 2009 (Runner Up)
No appearances to 1976.

Boyd County (14) (1 Championship, 2 Runner Ups, 6 Final Fours):

15th Region: 1985
16th Region: 1988 (Runner Up), 1990, 1992, 1993 (Final Four), 1994, 1997, 1998 (Runner Up), 1999, 2000 (Final Four), 2001 (State Champions), 2002, 2005 (Final Four), 2006

No appearances prior to 1976.

Ashland Paul Blazer (14) (3 Championships, 2 Runner Ups, 7 Final Fours):

15th Region: 1976, 1978, 1979
16th Region: 2004

And then here we go back into the depths of history, State Tournament appearance prior to 1976: 1940, 1941, 1942 (Runner Up), 1949, 1955, 1958, 1960 (Final Four), 1962, 1965 (Final Four), 1966 (State Champions), 1967 (State Champions), 1968 (State Champions- 3-peat), 1969 (Runner-up), 1975

Greenup County (6) (1 Runner Up, 1 Final Four):

15th Region: 1980, 1982
16th Region: 1996 (Runner Up), 2007, 2008, 2010

No appearance prior to 1976.

Prestonsburg (4) (1 State Championship, 2 Final Fours):

State Tournament Appearances prior to 1976: 1945, 1946, 1947 (Final Four), 1948 (State Champions)

Betsy Layne (1):

State Tournament Appearances prior to 1976: 1950

Jenkins (4) (2 Final Fours)
:

State Tournament Appearances prior to 1976: 1951 (Final Four), 1952, 1953 (Final Four), 1954

Belfry (1):

State Tournament Appearances prior to 1976: 1961

Elkhorn City (1):

15th Region: 1997

Sheldon Clark (1):

15th Region: 2006

Allen Central (1):

15th Region: 2003

Rowan County (2):

15th Region: 1981, 1983

East Carter (2) (1 State Championship, 1 Final Four):

15th Region: 1984 (State Champions)
16th Region: 2009

Russell (2):

16th Region: 1987, 1989

Raceland (1):

16th Region: 1991

Montgomery County (1):

15th Region: 1977

And there is a nice recap that took me an hour and a half to type up.

I would have to rank the programs in the 15th an 16th after all of that:

1. Ashland Paul Blazer
2. Boyd County
3. Paintsville
4. Pikeville
5. Greenup County
6. Lawrence County
7. Johnson Central
8. East Carter
9. Prestonsburg
10. Jenkins

Ashland is a far and away #1. Boyd and Paintsville are very close. Pikeville, Greenup County, Lawrence County, Johnson Central are not very far apart. East Carter has a State Title, but few Regional Titles, same with Prestonsburg. And then Jenkins had a nice run a loooong time ago.

The 15th has 3 State Champions, the 16th has 4.

That was a good afternoon's research. If only I was so inclined with actual studies.

After a little more research, All of those titles are accurate, but the Region in which they were won are not necessarily correct if it says a region different from what they are now. Some are right but others are not, but all Teams did win a regional title in the years listed, just maybe not in the region listed.

Hope this helps.
Thank you sir. I will definitely use this for my section on great programs. thanks again.

That is truly amazing of an athlete to be that great in two sports.

all I know is that there were several old High Schools before The County High School was built, Since it was built there has been no other high school here. there was the Old Irvine High School and Hargett (I'm not sure if that's how they spelt it or not) was here before Estill County High School was built.
