Maybe it doesn't make for a winning program always, but it makes for an HONEST program. No need to point fingers, the programs that rely on "transfers" to compete know who they are. Does anyone really believe that a school with an enrollment of 300 just happens to have some of the top talent in the region in their enrollment year in and year out? That's kind of like lightning striking the same spot every year for the last 50 years. It's all done with mirrors.

Teams in the 54th get transfers, they don't recruit. There's nothing wrong with the most talented players in the region transferring to another school. That is his or her choice, that's what it comes down too. The schools don't force them to go there.

There is only one word in the English language to describe this statement. Bull@#t
Call it getting transfers if it makes you feel better, but there is an awfull lot of transfering going on in the 54th district. The 56th district plays the hand their dealt and the 54th draws from the pile and swaps their cards. Everyone knows it goes on why even try to sugar coat it. I don't fault the kids for trying to get to a better team with better players but they can't make those decisions on their own they have help.

The 56th has good players as well just not as many as the 54th, as I've said before they could do better with their youth programs but thats not the primary reason why their not competing year in and year out and we all know why, recruiting oops I'm sorry transfers!

I would take the 5 best players in the 56th and go up against the 5 best in the 54th and I bet they would split a 10 game series.
If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck...anyway. I mostly follow the 56th,and win or lose, I'm proud that they haven't resorted to using "transfers" to solidify their team. Can't speak for the others in the district, but Estill County has a thriving AAU program in place. As a matter of fact, I was at the Sportsplex in Knott County last year, and several of the Estill youth teams handed Hazard a beating. I hear they have some transfers coming in though, so Hazard should be much better by the time High School comes around for these kids.
wildcatbball Wrote:So Powell County going on the road to play Hazard which has Eric Back, Jordan Olinger, Jon Combs, Jordan Frazier, Collier Mobelini, Jared Combs and the rest of your Hazard team is meaningless because B.J. Combs didn't play? I didn't know Hazard was a one man show. If he would have played they still would've lost. Hazard was up 9 at halftime and led by as many as 12 in the first half without B.J.??

Whenever a team from the 55th or 56th district wins a game against the powers of the 14th region its never legit. Powell has beat both Knott and Hazard this year, so I would say its not meaningless.

OK!! First, Collier Mobelini, and Jared Combs haven't played more then 8 minutes in a game, and they had to start this game. Second, Josh Hollan, who has been playing a lot more was out with an injury. Third, kid from JBS was out with Grades. Forth, Eric Back went out in the 3rd with a Broke Nose, so that was a big reason for the come back... Back went out, Hazard was up by 7.... He tried to come back in the 4th but it was too late.......Oh yeah and Bj Combs was out!!!
LOOKAYANNER Wrote:Aslan, you are one of the better and more logical posters on here but Powell's record is not an indication of how they are capable of playing at times. If they are on one of their hot shooting nights they can play with anyone in the region with the exception of Perry Central. They defeated Knott Central earlier this year. They're not that bad.

However, I do agree with you about the strength of the 54th district as compared to the 56th. Historically the 54th has always been stronger. But it doesn't have to be that way. Powell has 730 students and Estill has 720. That means they've both got over 350 boys to mold into competitive athletes. The only schools in the region that are larger are Perry and Letcher. Lee and Owsley are smaller schools but have had success in the past. It just takes hard work. That's what the 54th does better than anyone in the region. They work harder. Hazard has their Biddy League. There's basketball year round in sports venues around Hazard and Hindman.
Large schools like Powell and Estill should be in contention for a region basketball title every year, same as they are in baseball, where they have several regional championships in recent years. Get the youth programs going and do what it takes, but it can be done. I think the 56th is a sleeping giant on the scene in the 14th and with a little leadership, community support, and hard work, the 56th can be making a few trips to Rupp areana in the future.

Ah boys....

j/k
I had to do it

You're lucky Combs didn't get ejected in the Letcher Central game.

Are you saying that because Back went out of the game for a short time that is why they lost? He only scored 10 points and if you watched the game you would have seen he wasn't an issue for the Pirates.

It sound like a lot of excuses. You just got beat. Maybe you won't pick the Pirates to play you on Senior night anymore.:baby:
Ok First I didn't get Beat I wasn't playing...... I was just saying it was more then just Bj Combs out..... Sorry didn't mean to take anything away from Powell's biggest game ever...

I don't know all your players names thats why I said "and the rest of the team." Powell's tallest man is 6'2", they've played undersized all year and have for the past 3 years. You were missing one of your players due to discipline and the other due to grades (1 of your recruits, sorry transfers), Powell has played the entire year with out one of their players that averaged significant minutes last year. He got hurt in the Red/White game and is just now getting healthy and working his way back in on the JV team. You haven't heard Powell crying about injury's or grades when they lose a game. Its ususally because they got outplayed on that night as did Hazard on this night. Back didn't miss that much time and was a non factor anyway. Powell kept Olinger and Frazier in check for the most part. Powell's comeback was underway before Back went out and Back made 2 threes in the fourth to cut it to 6 or 7 and Powell didn't fold and they made the plays down the stretch and won the game, end of story. They play again who knows who will win, thats the way high school basketball is, but on Hazard senior night when everyone thought Hazard would win easily they ran into a Pirate team thats been playing some its best basketball of the year. They are 8-5 in their last 13 games just as Estill is 8-5 in their last 13. This region is wide open with the exception of Perry and the 56th could have something to say about it.

Congrats Pirates!
NO ONE in Hazard was thinking easy win. Hazard doesn't look for easy wins just for Senior Night, last year played Breathitt. Hazard looks at the big picture, getting ready for post-season. As for Powell keeping Frazier in check, come on Frazier average maybe 3 or 4 points a game so I'd say a lot of teams keep him in check and Olinger just ain't a post player. AND WHEN BACK WENT OUT HAZARD TURNED TO AN 8TH GRADER, so that 5 minutes Back was out, Powell out scored Hazard by 15. But anyways Congrats on the WIN!!! Seems like you Powell Fans are enjoying it.... I hope Powell wins that District!!!LOL....
Nice win for Powell, but lets not get nasty about it !! As far as height, I dont think Hazard has anyone who makes a difference over 6'2" !!!

Powell turns to a Freshman when their post players get in foul trouble, come on with the excuses. This just goes to my point early about a 55th or 56th district team wins a game against Hazard, Knott, or Perry theres always a reason why it happened. Powell has a good team this year and is capable of winning or losing to any team they play. I'm not trying to rub it in that Powell beat Hazard, yes its a good win for Powell because it was on the road. Getting wins on the road in the 14th is not easy not matter who your playing. Just give the excuses a rest because I'm sure Hazard will win the sweet 16 once they get all these talented players back.

Still the same outcome if they make the regional tourny, period.
Didn't Powell have a transfer from Clark County a few years back? Almost all schools get transfers. Most of which are the parents seeking out better options for their children. Parents recruit schools more tan schools recruit kids.

You are correct, can't remember his name but he left Powell Co. and went to Clark Co. and played very little varsity his Junior year then transferred back to Powell Co. his senior year. He graduated last year.

Christian was born and raised in Powell County and played for Powell through middle school and his freshman and sophmore year, transfered to Clark his junior year and came back to Powell for his senior year. He was a Pirate from the begining! A good person and ball player.
Didn't Estill get a couple of kids from Powell about that same time? Or was it just a rumor/attempt to transfer?
^ The Only Transfer I Remember That Estill Got From Powell County was David Crowe a few Years Back
During Coach Hall's first year (2008/2009) he had mutiple players quit the team or get removed from the team I don't know who quit and who was asked to leave but 2 players transferred, 1 to Wolfe and the other to Estill. Powell won 3 games that year with all the turmoil. Coach has done a good job rebuilding with the talent from Powell County and won 11 games last year and were runners up in the District. They have won 12 games this year and trying to improve on that with the District coming up. Congrats to Coach Hall for what he's been able to do at Powell with what the team went through 2 years ago.
Thanks for clearing that up, wildcat. I couldn't remember who went where. Good luck to the Pirates and Coach Hall.
congrats to PC
