The Shelby County girls' basketball team won its second game of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Iroquois 56-45 at Mike Casey Gymnasium.

The Rockets (2-17), who won their first game of the season Tuesday night at Eminence, trailed 15-13 after the first quarter, but outscored the Raiders (3-16) 43-30 the rest of the way.

"We were hitting big shots," Shelby County Coach Mike Sowers said. "We spend so much time on shooting I've been waiting for us to have a breakout game shooting, and today we did...And it was nice that it came in our final home game of the season."

The Rockets had a very balanced attack as they set a season-high point total. Sophomore forward Kirstin Dugle led the way with 15 points, while junior guard Hayley Powell had 12 and seventh-grader Justus Martin 10. Sophomore guard Lynsey Nichols added eight points.

"This definitely feels amazing, we've been working out butts off all year," Powell said. "I'm so proud of the girls, to be so young and have such big hearts."

Iroquois, the 2009 state champion, trimmed Shelby's lead to four with eight seconds left in the third quarter, but the Rockets quickly in-bounded the ball and got it upcourt. Martin caught the ball near midcourt, made a couple of strong dribbles, then passed underneath to a wide-open Nikki Simmons. Simmons' buzzer-beating layin gave Shelby all the breathing room it would need.

Simmons scored a rebound-basket to start the fourth to boost the Rockets' lead to eight (46-38) before Iroquois hit two free throws. But Nichols responded with a 3-pointer - Shelby's sixth of the game - to open things up again.

The Rockets next travel to South Oldham (14-5) on Tuesday night.
