Pikeville, KY - UVa-Wise won its third consecutive game and improved to 3-0 in Mid-South play with a 33-10 road victory over Pikeville College. The Cavaliers never trailed in the contest as place kicker Paul Melshen kicked a career best four field goals en route to the victory. A week after scoring 58 points and amassing more than 600 yards of total offense; Pikeville was limited to 230 yards and its second lowest scoring total of the season in the loss.
Following a three and out by Pikeville, UVa-Wise used a 19 play 80 yard drive consuming more than 10 minutes of the first quarter clock to move ahead 7-0. Stewart Robertson put the finishing touches on the drive when he scored from seven yards out; Allen Owens tacked on the extra point to give the Cavs a seven point advantage. UVa-Wise extended its lead to 10 when Melshan kicked his first of four field goals in the game, a 39 yard field goal with 14:07 to play in the first half. Pikeville scored its only first half points on the following drive when Ryan Wilson booted a 27 yard field goal to cut the lead to seven. The final score of the first half occurred when Melshen kicked a 41 yard field goal with 6:25 showing on the clock.
The second half featured a rush heavy offense by the Cavs. Vance Gibbs scored from nine yards out in the third quarter while Nick DiDonato collected his second touchdown of the season with a two yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Cavs a 33-10 lead after Owens added his third extra point of the game. In total, the Cavs ran the ball 56 times for 151 yards; the total marked the eighth straight game UVa-Wise has ran for more than 100 yards. Aside from the touchdown runs by Gibbs and Didonato were two more Melshen field goals; a career long of 44 yards and a 36 yard boot. Melshen has now made five consecutive field goal attempts including three of 40 or more yards. Pikeville's lone second half score came when B.J. Iverson scored from three yards out late in the third quarter to cut the Cavalier lead to 16 at 26-10.
