CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. â No. 13 Southeast Missouri kept its perfect league record intact Saturday afternoon as the Redhawks defeated the Eastern Kentucky University football team, 40-21. SEMO is now 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the OVC while the Colonels fall to 2-5 and 1-2.
The host Redhawks broke open a close game in the third quarter by putting together three scoring drives. On the opening possession of the second half, SEMOâs Nathan Grass recorded a seven-yard touchdown run to put the home team ahead, 27-14.
Southeast Missouri then added a 32-yard field goal following EKUâs third interception to stretch the lead to 30-14.
Junior Jeremy Caldwell tried to give Eastern some life as he returned the ensuing kick-off 98 yards for a touchdown to cut the deficit to 30-21.
However, Southeast Missouri responded again with an 80-yard touchdown drive to make the score 37-21 and put the game out of reach. On that drive, the Redhawks converted a 3rd-and-17 and 3rd-and-7. Quarterback Matt Scheible completed a 19-yard pass to Chantae Ahamefule on the first third down and then tossed a 23-yard touchdown strike to Gross on the latter third down play.
Eastern Kentuckyâs offense sputtered in the second half, moving the ball just seven yards on its first three possessions. The Colonels have now lost eight straight road games dating back to last year.
SEMOâs Scheible completed 9-of-10 passes for 177 yards and three touchdowns in the win. The junior also ran for 86 yards. Henry Harris reached 100 yards rushing for the seventh time this year as he finished with 109 yards on the ground and one score.
Easternâs quarterback T.J. Pryor threw for 139 yards, but also threw three interceptions. The three interceptions led to 17 Southeast Missouri points. Wide out Orlandus Harris tallied his second career 100-yard receiving day thanks to seven catches for 112 yards. Harris caught a 38-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
The Colonels return home for their next two contests. First up is the Homecoming game against Murray State on Oct. 30 at 3 p.m.
