RICHMOND, Ky. – Eastern Kentucky University sophomore quarterback T.J. Pryor rushed for three touchdowns in the first half and threw for another touchdown in the fourth quarter to lead the Colonels to a convincing 35-7 victory over Eastern Illinois University Saturday night at Roy Kidd Stadium.

EKU (2-3, 1-0 OVC) ran for a season-high 287 yards and also forced the Panthers (0-6, 0-4 OVC) into a season-high six turnovers.

Pryor rushed for 78 yards on 11 carries and completed 9-of-20 passes for 85 yards to lead the Colonels to a victory in their first Ohio Valley Conference game of the season. Junior Kyle Lumpkin added 73 yards on 15 carries and sophomore Matt Denham ran for 60 yards on five carries.

EIU quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo completed 23-of-41 for 272 yards and one touchdown. He tossed two interceptions. Kenny Whittaker caught nine passes for 102 yards.

The Colonels got on the board first with 11:27 left in the first quarter. A fumbled punt return gave the EKU offense the ball at the EIU 29-yard line. A 12-yard pass on second down to redshirt freshman Matt Lengel moved the ball to the 15. After a nine-yard gainer by sophomore Orlandus Harris, Pryor took it up the middle untouched from six yards out. Senior Logan O’Connor’s point-after made it a 7-0 game.

A 13-play, 80-yard drive midway through the second quarter extended the EKU lead to 14-0. The Colonels kept the ball on the ground for nine of the 13 plays, including the final six. Pryor converted a 4th-and-1 with a four-yard gainer. He capped the drive with a diving touchdown run from two yards out.

Eastern Kentucky extended its lead to 21-0 with a little more than two minutes remaining in the first half. Pryor had a pair of long runs on the drive. He picked up 28 yards up the left sideline and had a clear path to the end zone but stepped out of bounds at the EIU 47-yard line. On 3rd-and-13 from the 30, Pryor found a lane on the right side and went all the way to polish off another 80-yard drive with his third touchdown run.

A quick scoring drive right before halftime got the Panthers on the board. After starting the drive on the EIU 35-yard line, three straight pass completions by Garoppolo moved the visitors 32 yards to the EKU 33. After picking up four yards on the ground, Garoppolo found Lorence Ricks for 29 yards. The extra-point cut the Colonel lead to 21-7.

The Colonels capitalized on an Eastern Illinois turnover with 1:11 left in the third quarter. After EKU recovered a fumble at the 26-yard line, Lumpkin carried for 11 yards. Senior Bruce Frieson followed with a 15-yard touchdown run and Eastern Kentucky had a 28-7 lead.

Six minutes into the fourth quarter EKU took advantage of a short field again after junior Patrick McClellan returned an interception 15 yards to the 31-yard line. Frieson carried three straight times for 22 yards. On the final play, Pryor and Frieson hooked up for a 13-yard pass play to add seven more points to the scoreboard.

The Colonels play their first OVC road game on the season next weekend at UT Martin. Kickoff on Saturday is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET.

Big win
Griffin, you are correct. This was huge for the Colonels. After dropping 3 games already, they are going to have to win the OVC if they want to make the FCS playoffs. The offense is still very inconsistent. They are finally starting to get their rushing game going the past two weeks, but it has been against two suspect defenses. EKU's defense still worries me as well. The pass coverage wasn't great at times last night.
Congrats to EKU. I am excited to see them do well.
