Bears Drop Heartbreaker In Overtime
MONTGOMERY, Ala. â Junior receiver Courtney Pete rolled to his right, took a handoff and tossed it 25 yards into the end zone to sophomore Kyle McDowell to give Faulkner University a 42-36 win over Pikeville College Saturday afternoon at Cramton Bowl.
The pass came on Faulknerâs only play in overtime and ended a wild game that saw the lead change hands seven times with a remarkable play needed by the Bears to send the game to the extra period.
Pikeville got the ball with 21 seconds left at its own 42-yard line and then was penalized 10 yards, setting up a 1st-and-20 from the 32 with seven seconds left. Sophomore quarterback Trevor Hoskins rolled out of the pocket and hit freshman receiver Jordan Amis at the Faulkner 20. With no defenders in front of him, Amis scooted into the end zone as time expired to pull the Bears within one at 36-25.
With no time on the clock, Alabama native Mike Heiss booted the extra point to send the game to overtime.
Pikeville (0-4) had the ball first and failed to score, setting the stage for the Eaglesâ one-play scoring drive.
The loss dulled the effect of the single greatest passing day in Pikeville College history for Hoskins. The Middlesboro native was 31-of-54 in the air for 495 yards, all school records. His five touchdown passes tied a school mark as well.
Freshman running back B.J. Iverson ran 10 times for 27 yards but caught six passes for a school-record 171 yards as well.
Hoskins gave the Bears an early 13-0 lead, hitting Amis for a 15-yard score and then Iverson from 55 yards out. The second came with 5:50 still to play in the opening period.
Faulkner (1-2) found the scoreboard when Adrian Neal scored from two yards out. Thomas Price hit the extra-point to make it 13-7 at the end of the first.
Heiss stretched the lead when he nailed his first field goal of the season, a 35-yard boot to make it 16-7 with 13:29 left in the half.
After that, however, the Eagles got a pair of one-yard scoring runs from junior Brandon Cheatham, the second coming with 6:57 left in the half, and the extra-points gave them their first lead of the game at 21-16.
The Bears answered with a 17-yard Hoskins-to-Iverson pass before Cheatham regained the lead for the Eagles before the half, carrying four defenders the final five yards of a six-yard run with 15 seconds left to send the Eagles to the half with a 28-23 lead.
In the third period, Pikeville scored on a 13-yard pass from Hoskins to junior Axxel Rivas, but the conversion pass was incomplete. Faulkner scored with 3:38 left n the third when quarterback Zach Tribble found Jurell Williams on a five-yard pass. The Eagles went for two, and Tribbleâs pass found an open Pete to make it 36-29 and set the stage for the wild ending.
Faulkner had 106 rushing yards on 36 carries, while Pikeville gained only 58 yards on 23 rushes.
The Eagles were 24-of-43 in the air for 296 yards, with all but the game-winner being credited to Tribble.
Senior Jarvis Griffin was in on 12 tackles, with six being solos, to lead the Bears. Freshman C.J. Holcombe had three solo tackles and eight assists. Senior Anson Cunningham had nine tackles, with his four solos tying him for the career record in that category. Senior Travis Norris had three solos and six assists.
Freshman Taylor Woods had two solos and two assists and knocked down five Faulkner passes.
Pikeville will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts Campbellsville at 1:30 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.
