OWENSBORO, Ky. – After the first offensive set of the second half, Kentucky Wesleyan College posted a 34-13 lead and appeared ready to cruise past Pikeville College at Steele Stadium on Saturday night. But the guests had other ideas.

A score late in the third period and another early in the fourth brought the Bears back within a touchdown, but their final three drives were unable to produce any offense and the Panthers escaped with a 34-28 win.

Pikeville’s final opportunity to win the game began at their own 13-yard line with 3:28 to play. The Bears ran 11 plays and converted two fourth-down opportunities before standing third-and-eight at the Wesleyan 39 with only eight seconds left.

Sophomore quarterback Trevor Hoskins’ toss toward the end zone was intercepted by junior Cliff Thomas as the horn sounded to end the game.

Kentucky Wesleyan (1-1) got a four-touchdown performance from senior quarterback Chris Owen, who threw for 335 yards in the win on 25-of-39 in the air.

Pikeville (0-2), however, offset it on the scoreboard if not the numbers from Hoskins, who threw three touchdown passes and ran for another.

In the end, the difference in the game was a pair of Matt Wilson field goals, a 21-yarder to open scoring in the middle of the first period and the other from 30 yards out with 6:05 left in the third.

Pikeville outgained the Panthers 420 yards to 354, thanks largely to a huge rushing attack that finished with 229 yards on 41 carries (5.6 yards per carry). The Bears were led by junior tailback B.J. Iverson, who had 21 carries for 151 yards.

Hoskins was 18-of-37 for 191 yards in the loss. He hit junior wideout Bobby Owens six times for 19 yards and two of the touchdowns, scoring on plays of five and eight yards. The other scoring pass was to junior Axxel Rivas and covered 13 yards.

Trailing 34-21, Hoskins led the Bears on a seven-play, 87-yard drive that ended on an eight-yard keeper. Sophomore Mike Heiss’ PAT made it 34-28 with 9:56 left.

Hoskins’ run was the only one of eight touchdowns in the game that came on the ground.

Defensively, the Bears were led by true freshman Larry West with eight tackles (six solos). Freshman Jade Haddix had six solo tackles in the loss.

The teams were often bogged down by excessive penalties. In the game, they combined to be flagged 25 times for a total of 256 yards.

Pikeville will return to action a week from Saturday when they playing their home opener, entertaining Shorter College at 1:30 p.m. at the W.C. Hambley Athletics Complex.

Rough loss for the Bears. But in the grand scheme of things, it does not matter. Win those games once you get into the conference play.
I talked to Holland, he said he had a play that was misunderstood, resulted in losing a few seconds. Also glad to see some area kids getting PT.
Hope to hear of a PC win against Shorter College this weekend.
