The University of Miami has a new defensive line coach.

Two sources close to the university have confirmed that Rick Petri has been hired by the Hurricanes to replace Clint Hurtt, who left UM to coach the defensive line at Louisville.

Petri was the defensive line coach for Kentucky the past five seasons, but was one of two assistants not retained by new Wildcats head coach Joker Phillips.

But Petri, 56, is not new to the Hurricanes. He served as an assistant defensive line coach at UM from 1993 to 1995. Some of Miami's best defensive linemen were tutored by Petri, including Kenny Holmes, Kenard Lang and All-Americans Warren Sapp and Kevin Patrick.

Patrick, who now coaches defensive ends at South Florida, was believed to be a prospective candidate to replace Hurtt. But new USF coach Skip Holtz retained Patrick on his new staff.

Petri is known as an adept, enthusiastic instructor who gets the most out of his players, regardless of talent level. He helped Kentucky - not on the same talent level as most SEC East teams - get to four consecutive bowl games. The Wildcats had won three of those bowl games prior to this past season's loss to Clemson in the Music City Bowl.

Petri has two sons, Brad, who is in his mid 20s, and Kory, in his early 20s. Both were known to wear Hurricanes' gear when they lived in Oxford, Miss.

Before Kentucky, Petri coached defensive tackles at Mississippi from the end of the 1998 season through 2004. But he began his Ole Miss career from 1989-91 as a defensive line coach, before going to Louisiana Tech to coach defensive tackles in 1992.

Petri received his undergraduate degree from Missouri-Rolla, where he was a noseguard. He earned his master's degree in physical education from Pittsburg State.

He also coached the offensive line as an assistant at Arkansas State in 1979, and then switched to the defensive line at Arkansas State from 1980 through '88.

Another Southeastern Conference stop for Petri: South Carolina (1996-98), where he coached defensive ends, including future first-round pick John Abraham.

He began his career in coaching as a grad assistant at Pittsburg State in Kansas.
