LEXINGTON, Ky. – Quarterback Mike Hartline will have surgery on Tuesday to repair the cartilage damage in his knee, Coach Rich Brooks announced Sunday.

Hartline sustained a torn medial collateral ligament and torn cartilage on Oct. 10 during the South Carolina game. After missing four games, Hartline's MCL healed and he played briefly at Vanderbilt on Saturday, completing 2 of 6 passes for 10 yards. However, the cartilage injury limited Hartline's mobility.

“Visited with Mike Hartline today and we're going to go ahead and operate on that knee and get that cartilage repaired,” Brooks said. “Under the quickness and speed of the game, it responded a little differently than it did in practice. We decided to go ahead and get it fixed, which means he'll miss the last two games (of the regular season) and should be ready for bowl practice.

“We knew before anything could be done on the cartilage, the medial collateral ligament had to tack down, which it did. We could have done it last week and operated on the cartilage, but when the game starts flying as fast as it does in the SEC, and try to plant and move and go, it just wasn't functioning correctly, so we decided to go ahead and get it done on Tuesday morning.”

True freshman Morgan Newton has started the last five games. He has completed 58.9 percent of his passes (43 of 73), for 402 yards and two touchdowns. He also has rushed for a net 86 yards and two touchdowns.
