I've been on here for a little more than a month and I think that several people are confused when they hear the words Middle School when referring to football, I happen to be one of those people because after reading a few posts I don't think that we all do it the same when it comes to setting up feeder programs across the mountains. In Letcher County this is what it means. We field one team which we call our B-Team and that is our 5th/6th grade team. We also field (first time ever) our 7th grade team. Then you have our A-team which is our 8th grade boys. We allow 6th graders to play up on the 7th grade team if size and ability permits as well as allow 7th graders to play up for the same reasons on the 8th grade team, according to our coaches the conference they play in allows some 8th graders to play down on the 7th grade team if they are not starters or main contributers on the A-team, I do not think we are doing that currently though. Then you have our pee-wee teams in the county which are made up of our 2nd,3rd,4th graders and we currently have four of these teams.

Is this the way that everyone else in the mountain area does their programs. If not shoot out a post and let everyone know how your county organizes their football program for the youngsters. I'm sure our coaches and athletic directors would love to hear how other areas set up their programs because we here in Letcher County are not above stealing a few good ideas.
Over here in Harlan County we have 5th and 6th grade teams and 7th and 8th grade teams. We are in the CVC (Cumberland Valley Conference) Our pee wee football league is for 3rd and 4th graders.

In our county we have Cumberland, Evarts, and New Harlan.

New Harlan used to be two teams, but a couple of years back they didn't have the numbers to field two teams and combined West Harlan and Cawood to form New Harlan. The Evarts team consists of kids from Evarts Elementary and Black Mountain elementary. Cumberland is the biggest elementary school in the county and only gets players from one school. These three teams will be the feeder teams for the Harlan County Black Bears.
Russell Red Devils has this:
1. 4 JFL teams. Browns, Raiders, Devils and Steelers.
2. These teams have 7,8,9 and 10 year olds. The 7,8 year olds play on the B-team,,,9-10 year olds on A team.
3. If you are 10 years old at Aug,1 you stay in the JFL, if you are 11 on Aug 1 you play up on the 6th grade.
4. The 6th grade team consists of all 6th graders, plus 11 year old 5th graders.
........no 6th grader can play up on the 7th grade team.
5. The 7th grade team consists of 7th graders and only 7th graders, no 6th grader can play up on the 7th.
6. The 8th grade team consists of 8th graders and some 7th graders. Sometimes the 7/8 will split to play a team that only has a 7/8th grade team.

At no point will any kid play down on a team. The only playing up comes from 7th graders who may play up on combined games.
This is standard operating procedures. One thing I can say is that no one should ever have to worry about older kids playing down at Russell, because we do not allow it. EVER.

6th grade team is still considered a JFL part of the program. Due to other schools not having a 6th grade in the middle school.
Thats how it is done here.
In our conference, (Mid Bluegrass Conference) it includes the following schools:

1) Shelby East Middle
2) Shelby West Middle
3) North Oldham Middle
4) South Oldham Middle
6) Oldham County Middle
7) East Oldham Middle
8) Christian Academy of Louisville

This is for grades 7&8 Usually the 8th grade team will play first and then 7th grade follows.

We have a youth league in Shelby County that includes 5&6 in one league

3rd & 4th in another league

Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade in another league

Just wondering Mama Bear what teams are included in the Cumberland Valley conference? Are there Teams from Virginia in this conference?
CVC is made up of:
Cumberland
Evarts
Leslie
Pennington Gap, Va.
New Harlan

Used to be Bell County,Harlan Independent, and Middlesboro were in it.
In Johnson County, it is set up as follows:

We have six county elementary schools (Central Eagles, Flat Gap Greyhounds, Highland Wildcats, Meade Devils, Porter Panthers and W.R. Castle Tomcats) which each have a 3rd & 4th grade team that plays on Saturdays and they also each have a 5th & 6th grade team that plays on Tuesdays. These six schools are feeders for the Johnson County Middle School which fields a 7th grade team that schedules games against other 7th grade teams and they also schedule schools that have 7th & 8th combined. Johnson County Middle School also fields an 8th grade team that plays 8th grade teams only. 7th graders also have the opportunity to play up on the 8th grade team. The six elementary schools also have flag football on Saturdays for kids in the 2nd grade and below.
football. Grayson Co. has separate 7th and 8th grade teams and that is how it is classified for middle school football. Seventh graders are permitted to play for 8th and any 6th grader wishing to play middle school 7th level must try-out first. K-5 must play jr. pro or pop warner football. Our tackle program starts in 3rd grade and k-2 play flag.
I read somewhere on this board that the state is considering aligning the middle school football teams into districts, Regions etc. for the purpose of a statewide playoff. Has anyone heard of this?

This should help with questions...
Because we aren't in a league, it is very difficult for us to get 6th grade games.
Middle School football is confusing, disorganized and plays by different rules all over the Commonwealth. To help organize middle school football and communicate among coaches, several coaches have formed the Kentucky Middle School Football Association - KYMSFA. Please visit http://www.kymiddleschoolfootball.com to learn more about our effort. Middle School teams from across the Commonwealth have now joined in our effort and we have conducted the 1st Kentucky Middle School Football Conference On Conference State Championship. Please assist us as we now move towards our 2nd year and a continued effort to improve middle school football in the Commonwealth. Our 2nd Annual meeting will be held during the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic in Louisville on February 13-15th.
Where will this meeting be held? Hotel etc....
The 2nd Annual Meeting of the Kentucky Middle School Football Association will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2009 during the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic which will be held in Louisville at the Galt House East Hotel. The time and meeting information will be posted on the KYMSFA website at http://www.kymiddleschoolfootball.com. Every middle school conference, team and coach is invited to join the Association and participate.
