Final from Pikeville tonight.

This was the first game of the season for the Wildcats, and it showed as they made a couple of costly turnovers to keep it close. Valley did take the opening possession and methodically march down the field, chewing up the entire quarter and taking an early 8-0 lead.

In the next period, Valley forced a quick 3-and-out from Pikeville, and took over again with designs on going up by two scores. However, the Wildcats fumbled it away on the next series, giving the Panthers excellent field position. A couple offsides penalties helped Pikeville move the ball down to the 20, then with less than a minute left a Panther broke loose for a touchdown to cut it to 8-6. Valley would move the ball to midfield before halftime, but time would run out.

The third period saw Pikeville take the opening possession and pick up a couple first downs, but the Wildcat defense stiffened and forced a punt. Valley then began to methodically move downfield again, but a fumbled handoff early in the 4th quarter would give Pikeville the ball deep in their own territory.

This time the Valley defense was up to the challenge, and would eventually stop the Panthers on 4th down to take possession once more. This time they would not be denied, and punched it in to set the final score of 16-6. Pikeville's final possession would pick up a couple first downs, but it was not enough.

Valley opens their season at 1-0. They will face Mullins next week.
