Maynard wins the Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing tournament

LOUISA - The Tug Valley Bass Anglers fishing club held its third tournament of the 2013 season on Yatesville Lake Sunday. There was an outstanding turnout for the tournament with 29 anglers competing in the event. In the end, veteran angler Grey Maynard finished first.
Yatesville Lake was at full pool and the water was clear to slightly stained everywhere on the lake except the backend where it was stained with a temperature of 65 degrees.
Weather for the tournament was fair with light rain all day, moderate winds and an air temperature around 60 degrees.
Fishing for the tournament was good. Most of the fish are still prespawn, they are around the spawning areas but have not been on the beds. The fish were caught in 2 to 10 feet of water on the main lake as well as in the larger creeks.
The main pattern for this tournament was to fish minnow imitations. Topwater, crankbaits and jerkbaits were reported as the top producers. Pitching or flipping soft plastics to shallow wood cover also produced several fish.
The top finishers were as follows: 1 — Greg Maynard (5 fish), 12.98 lbs; 2. Kevin Marcum (4 fish), 10.45 lbs; 3. Johnny Webb (4 fish), 9.59 lbs; 4. Lynn Fields (3 fish), 9.53 lbs; 5. Joe Collins (3 fish), 9.26 lbs.; 6. Brandon Staten (4 fish), 8.97 lbs.; 7. Michael Salyer (4 fish), 7.96 lbs.; 8. MO (3 fish), 7.23 lbs; 9. Chris Taylor (3 fish), 6.45 lbs; 10. Matthew Chapman (3 fish), 5.88 lbs.
