Final from earlier this afternoon!
This was round three of the battle between Valley and Phelps this year, and SV won the game that counted the most by suffocating the Hornets on defense.
Phelps started out on offense, and after a holding call negated a big gain, Valley forced the Hornets to punt. SV then marched down to the 10-yard-line, but came up short on 4th down. However, Valley forced a fumble on the very next play, and would cash in the touchdown a couple plays later to take an early 7-0 lead.
The rest of the half was fairly uneventful, as neither team was able to do much on offense. Other than a couple plays, the entire first half was played on the Phelps side of the 50. However, despite some good field position, SV could not punch in another score before the half, and went to the break up by a touchdown.
Valley got the ball first in the second, and marched down to the Phelps 40 before having a big gain negated by a holding call. They would end up punting, but the Valley defense held strong again. When the Hornets fumbled inside their own 35, the Wildcats took advantage of the good field position and scored again early in the fourth quarter to push the lead to 14-0.
With the way the Valley defense was playing, it appeared that was all the points they would need. Phelps did mount one last drive and advanced to the SV 40, but that was as close as they would come to scoring. On 4th-and-long, a desperation pass by the Hornets was intercepted and almost run back for another TD. Valley then took a couple of knees to end it and wrap up the title.
Congrats to both teams on a good season, but especially to Shelby Valley, the 2012 Pike County 3rd/4th Grade Champions!
