Great Midwest Athletic Conference Commissioner Tom Daeger announced on Tuesday that Georgetown College has accepted an invitation to join the G-MAC as a Provisional Member, effective July 1, 2012.
Georgetown, which recently announced intentions to apply for NCAA Division II membership, is the eighth member institution of the G-MAC. Georgetown joins The University of Virginiaâs College at Wise as a Provisional Member of the G-MAC. If successfully admitted into NCAA Division II candidacy, Georgetown will become a Full Member of the G-MAC and join charter members Cedarville University (Cedarville, Ohio), Central State University (Wilberforce, Ohio), Kentucky Wesleyan College (Owensboro, Ky.), Trevecca Nazarene University (Nashville, Tenn.), Urbana University (Urbana, Ohio), and Ursuline College (Pepper Pike, Ohio).
Georgetown, a private, liberal arts college located in Georgetown, Ky., will apply for NCAA Division II membership prior to June 1. If approved by the NCAA Division II Membership Committee, Georgetown will enter the candidacy process with the goal of becoming an active NCAA Division II member for the 2015-16 academic year.
Dr. Bill Brown, Cedarville University President and chair of the G-MAC Presidentâs Council noted, âGeorgetown College has a long history of academic rigor and athletic excellence. They will certainly become one of the anchors of the conference as we move ahead.â
âGeorgetown is a terrific addition to the G-MAC membership and, if approved to enter the membership process, is well positioned to make the transition to NCAA Division II,â Daeger said. âThe institution shares our desire to provide a complete collegiate experience for its student athletes and embraces the role in which it feels athletics should play in that endeavor. â
The Tigers will be included in future G-MAC schedules, and if approved as a NCAA Division II candidate, will gain voting status in the G-MAC. Georgetown, currently a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the Mid-South Conference, sponsors 16 sports.
Included in the sports sponsored by Georgetown are baseball, menâs and womenâs soccer, menâs and womenâs basketball, menâs and womenâs cross country, menâs and womenâs golf, menâs and womenâs tennis, football, menâs and womenâs track and field, volleyball and softball. The Tigers have claimed multiple NAIA National Championship titles and consistently contend for the Presidents Cup of the Mid-South, highlighting a well-rounded athletic department.
The G-MAC, which was approved by the NCAA as a member conference effective September 1, 2012, will be working through an educational assessment program for the 2012-13 academic year with the goal of beginning competition as the 24th active NCAA Division II conference by 2013-14.
