Sophomore Lauren Cum bess pitched her first no-hitter Saturday to lead the University of Kentucky softball team to a 4-0 victory over visiting Georgia.

The series clincher gave the Wildcats their second-ever series win over Georgia. The last was in 2000.

The teams play their series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.

"Lauren was just outstanding today," UK Coach Rachel Lawson said. "For her to do what she just did against a great hitting team like Georgia is awesome, and I am so happy for her."

Cumbess (3-4) struck out seven, walked three and hit a batter in the seven-inning game.

Winning in front of 1,123 fans at the UK Softball Complex, the Cats improved to 21-22 overall and 8-8 in the Southeastern Conference. They have won five of their last six.

Georgia fell to 33-10 and 11-7.

Cumbess's no-hitter was the first by a UK pitcher since Rachel Riley threw a perfect game against Austin Peay on April 6, 2011.

Kentucky scored twice in the first inning and twice in the second.

Brittany Cervantes led off the first with a hit after a 10-pitch at-bat. Kara Dill then reached on an error, and Riley walked to load the bases. With two outs, Cumbess reached on an error that allowed Dill to score. Emily Jolly was then hit by a pitch, scoring pinch runner Macy Allen for a 2-0 Kentucky lead.

In the second, Cervantes hit her seventh homer of the year. The Cats scored their final run when Dill doubled, Riley singled and Ginny Carroll drove home Dill with another double.

"Any time you are fighting for your lives to get above .500 and get to the NCAA Tournament, every win is a big win," Lawson said. "To win an SEC series against a quality team like Georgia is a great accomplishment for this team
